Once your braces or aligners are removed, it marks the end of the active phase of your orthodontic treatment at Schaumburg Dental Implant Center. Congratulations on reaching this milestone! However, to ensure that your hard work pays off and to maintain your new, beautiful smile, it’s crucial to follow through with the next phase: retention.
What is Retention?
Teeth are supported by periodontal ligaments, which need time to adapt to their new positions after orthodontic treatment. Once your braces or aligners are off, these ligaments may still want to shift your teeth back to their original positions. To prevent this, a retainer is used to keep your teeth stable in their new alignment.
Types of Retainers
There are three main types of retainers, each suited for different needs:
- Hawley Retainers: The most traditional and widely recognized type, Hawley retainers consist of a thin acrylic plate molded to fit the roof of your mouth, with a wire that keeps your teeth in place. Known for their durability and ease of use, Hawley retainers are a reliable choice for many patients.
- Clear Aligners: Similar to Invisalign® trays, clear aligners are custom-made from thin, transparent plastic. They are nearly invisible and comfortable to wear. However, they may not be as robust as Hawley retainers and are not ideal for individuals who grind their teeth.
- Fixed Retainers: These are bonded to the back of your teeth and remain in place for years. Typically used for lower front teeth, fixed retainers are invisible and offer continuous support without the need for removal.
How Long Will You Need to Wear a Retainer?
In most cases, you’ll need to wear your retainer full-time for about 3 to 6 months. The exact duration may vary based on your specific needs and how your teeth respond to the retainer.
